Coltrane's "Blue Train" - Avant-Garde Version

In 1961, John Coltrane and his classic quartet, with special guest Eric Dolphy, performed in Stockholm, Sweden.

The 60's saw 'Trane experiment more into modal and avant-garde jazz. If you remember a year back I posted a video link to Blue Train, the track title of the superb 1959 album of the same name.

This version from the 1961 concert, shows how 'Trane evolved in only a matter of 2 years to different direction.

The atonalities, the sweeps, and the intensity makes this track a complete opposite of the original hard bop version.

'Trane always starts slow and in the "comfort zone" until he unleashes the kraken starting at 1:35 in the video. And Dolphy's playing only elevates this track further.

Sorry for the video's audio quality!
