'Poor Boy / London Session' - Howlin' Wolf

In 1971, Chess Records released an album recorded the year prior, called 'The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions'. This album featured Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts (the latter two from The Rolling Stones) alongside Howlin' Wolf and his guitarist Hubert Sumlin.

The result was a blues with a rock twist, where Wolf would sing traditional blues with Sumlin on Chicago guitar embellishes over British blues rock grooves.

Here's a song from that album, called 'Poor Boy', a blues standard:

'I Asked For Water (She Gave Me Gasoline)' - Howlin' Wolf

The Wolf with his band, including Hubert Sumlin

Chester Burnett , AKA Howlin' Wolf, was one of the main pillars of the Chicago blues, along side label friend/rival Muddy Waters.

His vocal style, multi-instrumental playing and stage presence led him to be one of the top musicians of all time, being listed number 54 on Rolling Stone Magazines '100 Greatest Artists'. He is also inducted in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame and the Blues Hall of Fame, with several blues and rock standards under his helm.

This song from 1956, is one such standard, and it popularized the blues saying 'I asked her for water but she gave me gasoline'.

Pink Floyd Sang The Blues Too

This is not Seamus, but Nobs, from The Live in Pompeii concert.

The Beatles did it. Cyndi Lauper did it. Shit, even Steven Seagal did it. So, why can't Pink Floyd?

The Floyd, known for their psychedelic rock experiments, got a dog, named Seamus, into the studio and recorded a 12-bar blues with Seamus howling in the background like a sick dog. The slide guitar playing by David Gilmour and the bluesy piano of Richard Wright keep things bluesy. Roger Waters is on bass. The song appears on the 1971 album, Meddle.

Just another example of the cross-genre usage of the blues!

Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, & Bo Diddley Join Forces

What do you get when you cross three of the best blues artists of all time?

The album 'The Super Super Blues Band' was released in 1968, as a follow up to the previous release called 'The Super Blues Band' which featured Muddy, Bo, and Little Walter.

This album features group renditions of their classic songs, including Muddy's 'Long Distance Call', Wolf's 'Spoonful', and Bo's 'Diddley Daddy'.

It features a breat back up band featuring Buddy Guy on bass, Hubert Sumlin on guitar, and Otis Spann on piano.

The result is an interesting take on these songs, and it's difficult to imagine these guys working together seeing they all had rivalries within Chess Records and as bluesmen, especially Muddy and Wolf.

Here's 'Going Down Slow', featuring Muddy Waters' signature slide guitar.
