Ornette Coleman is the lead innovator of avant-garde and free jazz; and this was from the onset with his debut album, "Something Else!!!!", recorded on February 10, 1958.
While it did not cause the massive controversy as his third album "The Shape of Jazz to Come", this album did cause a stir as he was doing something less conventional from the jazz going on at the time.
Later on in the years, Ornette would be considered the godfather of free jazz; many others, including John Coltrane, took his inspiration of breaking free from musical restriction.
Here's a track of the album; remember at the time, the sax sound and tone was considered unconventional.
